Photographing the Eastern Sierra: From Alabama Hills to Mono Lake

Eastern Sierra Nevada Photography: Alabama Hills, Mono Lake, and the Highway 395 Corridor

Most people approach the Sierra Nevada from the west. They wind through foothills and forest, ascending gradually toward Yosemite or Sequoia, the landscape softening with elevation and humidity. The eastern approach is entirely different. This is an escarpment. The Sierra drops ten thousand feet from Mt. Whitney to the floor of the Owens Valley in less than a dozen horizontal miles. The light here is desert light — hard and clear without the softening moisture of the coast. At the right hour, it rivals any landscape light in California.

The Eastern Sierra is not a single destination. It is a continuous photographic corridor running along Highway 395, connecting distinct ecosystems and rock formations that reward serious attention across seasons and years. From the Alabama Hills in the south to Mono Lake in the north, with Death Valley as a southern extension of the same high desert system, this region offers photographers a chance to build a body of work that captures the full range of what this landscape does with light.

The Alabama Hills occupy the high desert immediately beneath Mt. Whitney and the Needles. These rounded Jurassic rock formations predate the Sierra Nevada itself, pushed to the surface as the range rose around them over millions of years. Their warm orange and brown tones create visual tension against the gray granite peaks behind them — a contrast that the camera finds endlessly productive. The signature location is the Mobius Arch, a naturally formed stone arch that frames Whitney and the Needles with perfect geometry. We recommend arriving before dawn, positioned at the arch as the light begins to separate the peaks from the sky. Spring is the right season: snow still caps Whitney's summits, deepening the contrast between the white peaks and the warm foreground rock. We have been here many times across different seasons and light, and the image never exhausts itself — the Mobius Arch at the Alabama Hills, Whitney and the Needles in frame, is one of those compositions that reveals something new with every change in light.

Mono Lake is ancient, older than the Sierra Nevada itself, with no outlet. Fed by streams but losing water only through evaporation, minerals concentrate over millennia. The water is alkaline and salty, supporting only brine shrimp and alkali flies, but also clear and reflective when still. The lake's most distinctive features are the tufa towers — calcium carbonate formations that look like pipe organs or coral reefs depending on the light, forming where calcium-rich freshwater springs bubble up through the alkaline water. The South Tufa area is the primary photographic location, and it rewards two distinct conditions: at sunset, when the towers catch warm light while the lake mirrors the color of the sky; and before dawn, when the lake is dark and remote enough to reveal the Milky Way, Jupiter and Mars rising over the South Tufa 

The conservation story surrounding Mono Lake adds depth to the work. For decades, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power diverted nearly all incoming stream water, causing the lake level to drop and threatening the ecosystem. The Mono Lake Committee pursued a legal campaign throughout the 1990s that forced the city to release enough water to allow the lake to recover. Understanding this history transforms the photographs from abstract beauty into testimony — the towers visible today were underwater not long ago.

Death Valley is a southern extension of the same high desert photographic circuit. Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level, presents the landscape equivalent of a minimalist composition: a vast salt flat where early morning light grazes across the salt cracks, creating shadow and relief that gives the featureless surface its form. Further into the park, the moving rocks of Racetrack Playa — Death Valley's great geological mystery [LINK: ] — leave long trails across a flat clay surface, a phenomenon explained definitively only in 2014. Winter is the right season for Death Valley: the valley floor is bearable, the air is clear, and the low sun angle creates long shadows across the salt and dramatic sidelighting on distant mountains.

The Eastern Sierra is not a single location to visit on just one occasion. It is a corridor to work across seasons: spring for snow still on Whitney's peaks and desert wildflowers at Alabama Hills; fall for exceptional clarity and deeper color along the entire 395 corridor; winter for Death Valley when the low sun makes the salt flats sing. The same formations reveal something new with every season and every return. The Mobius Arch at dawn in spring is not the same photograph as the Alabama Hills at sunset in fall, though the rocks themselves do not move. The patience the Eastern Sierra rewards is not the patience of waiting for a single moment — it is the patience of returning across years.

Möbius Arch — Alabama Hills, Eastern Sierra

The Mobius Arch is a Jurassic sandstone formation at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, older than the mountains it frames. Standing inside it, with Whitney and the Needles filling the opening and the desert floor dropping away beneath, the compression of distance is almost vertiginous — the arch perhaps fifty feet away, the summit fourteen thousand feet distant, both in the same frame. This is the Eastern Sierra's essential image: old stone framing older stone, warm desert rock in front of cold granite, the arid present looking through to the alpine past. Spring clouds have built against the east face of the range — they move in from the Pacific, hit the wall of the Sierra, and pile up against the peaks, casting the specific purple-blue that high cloud throws over granite in the hour before the light changes. The peaks carry patches of snow. We have stood here many times in different seasons and different light. The composition is always waiting, and it is never quite the same twice.
