Above Calibishie

26 de marzo de 2026

Calibishie is a small town on the north side of the small Caribbean island of Dominica. If you’ve never been, we highly recommend it. Lush with friendly people and almost nothing on the animal or plant kingdom is trying to kill you. Dominica—not to be confused with decidedly less desirable Dominican Republic—sits at the confluence of the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans.  The blue of the latter and the gray of the former often form a starkly visible border on the water. And it does occasionally get hammered by hurricanes. We were originally  scheduled to visit in 2017 when Hurricane Maria hit. Maria was devastating and deadly to Dominica. It took a full two years before the island was ready for tourism again. It was worth the wait.

On this morning, I got up early and drove around to the north shore to a spot high enough to see the town and bay of Calibishie. On the opposite side of the bay is an excellent prospect for sunsets.  This morning, dawn broke with a dull yellow sky. A low fog and mist hugged the town coast, mixing with the smoke from early morning fires. Machinery and material for reconstruction were noticeable in several spots. But for the oceans and the birds, it was quiet.

Above Calibishie

From the hillside above Calibishie on Dominica's northeast coast, the first light of dawn separates the deep blue of the sky from the silver of the Atlantic below — a distinction so gradual and precise that the horizon becomes a color event rather than a line. Calibishie is a fishing village of fewer than 700 people, the most Caribbean of the Eastern Caribbean islands: no resorts, no cruise terminal, fishing boats already in the water before the sky fully opens. This medium format panorama captures the full arc of the bay and the sky above it, the village rooflines in silhouette along the lower frame. Dominica's mornings smell of rain and woodsmoke and salt, and this image begins before the island has revealed itself completely.
