Parvus: A Perspective

The redwoods tower over us and everything else being them. From the tiniest of insects and particulate detritus of the forest floor to the sonorous streams to the beautiful sword ferns that carpet the ground. Parvus, from the Latin for "small,"  is the story of one young sword fern sheltered by a massive redwood and illuminated in the early morning sun.

Parvus: A Redwood Perspective

The sword fern in this image is perhaps knee-high — a single plant, lit by morning sun that has found one specific gap in the old-growth canopy overhead. Behind it, the redwood trunk rises out of frame, its base wider than the fern is tall. Parvus: small, in the precise context of the enormously old and the enormously large. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, where the old-growth canopy is dense and continuous enough that direct light reaches the forest floor only through gaps that shift with the sun — making each moment of illumination on a single plant feel deliberate. It is not deliberate. It is the geometry of very old trees and very early morning, available for a few minutes at a time.
