


Badwater Attitude
Badwater Basin sits 282 feet below sea level at the floor of Death Valley — the lowest point in North America, the salt flat stretching three miles across, the Black Mountains rising directly from its eastern edge as if the earth decided to be extreme in every direction at once. The basin takes its name from a small spring of brackish water noted by a surveyor in the 1800s, the notation "bad water" marking a pool that cattle refused to drink — a name that stuck. The salt surface, evaporated from ancient lake beds, forms polygon patterns that the eye follows toward the horizon, each polygon outlined by a raised ridge of crystallized sodium chloride a few inches high. This monochrome HDR composition approaches the basin at ground level, the polygons in the foreground resolving in the near field while the mountain faces rise in the distance — a treatment that makes the scale legible, the salt geometry intimate, the vastness of the place earned rather than simply declared. The word "attitude" means what it always means: a deliberate, unhesitating way of standing in front of a subject.
