Spillway

The composition that makes this image work requires a specific position in Yosemite Valley from which Cathedral Spires and Bridalveil Fall align in the same frame — not adjacent, but stacked, the fall's white thread appearing in the notch between the spires. In spring, when snowmelt is at its peak, the Bridalveil Creek spillway above the main fall becomes visible as a second, thinner strand of water falling above the primary drop — a detail that only appears in sufficient runoff conditions and only from this angle. Made on medium format, the image resolves the water thread from the rock, the spires from the sky — detail that matters when the print is large. The position was found by walking the south wall road slowly and stopping when the elements aligned.
