From my first Viti to the Alabama Hills and Mt. Whitney. I was camped at Lone Pine Campground, a very nice place, with Lone Pine Creek flowing right past my campsite. I had driven up to the Mt. Whitney Portal Campground the afternoon before, hiked a round a little, taking a few sketch shots, enjoying a beer in the warm sun and cool air. I knew full well that morning would likely not bring an impressive "sky on fire," but I still got up at 4:30, pulled the kit together and headed up toward the mountain.
It's something to reach almost 7,000 feet in elevation, and realize that the spirit in from of you is till another 7,000 feet higher. No clouds, but the sun on Mt. Whitney was brilliant, and the light streaming through the points was warm and welcoming.
