Winter Light

El Capitan catches the first light of a winter sunrise while the valley floor below remains in blue shadow — a vertical journey of roughly 3,000 feet separating the warm gold on the summit from the cold gray at the base, the dividing line between lit and unlit granite moving down the face at a speed you can watch. This is the moment that requires arriving in the dark: the meadow below El Capitan in winter, well below freezing, tripod on frozen ground, waiting for a light event that lasts perhaps four minutes before the contrast softens into ordinary daylight. Made on medium format, the image resolves the full range from shadow to sunlit granite — the detail that makes large-format printing of this scene possible. The temperature was cold enough that breath fogged the viewfinder.
