"Brilliant" names a third version: the valley in exceptional clarity, the light direct and unfiltered, the granite of El Capitan and the far walls rendered with a precision that soft or overcast conditions deliberately withhold. After a storm clears in Yosemite, the washed air resolves the far walls with a sharpness that feels almost excessive — the individual exfoliation sheets on El Capitan visible at a distance where, in normal conditions, they blend into a single face. The Merced in this light runs cold and fast, catching the color of the sky and the stone in a foreground that reflects both; the cottonwoods along the bank, when in leaf, hold their own green against the gray of the granite.
