Never Again: Centennial Stump
The Centennial Stump stands in General Grant Grove at a scale that reframes everything around it — twenty-four feet across, the exposed heartwood still pale against the forest floor, the surrounding sequoias providing context that is also, quietly, a rebuke. This is what they were. What stands now is what was saved. Photographed in December, when winter light enters the grove at a low angle and catches the cut surface and the texture of bark still clinging to the stump's edges, the image asks the viewer to hold both things at once: what was lost here, and what was protected because of it. The Centennial Stump did not save the redwoods. But the outrage it generated helped build the argument that eventually did.
